After Dark

Artist Statement

This is a series of night photos, primarily of my village, Leigh, which is a fishing village north of Auckland, New Zealand. This series is being exhibted at the Leigh Sawmill in December 2009.

Sometimes, if I can't sleep, I go out with my camera. Sitting around on the side of the road while the camera makes minute-long exposures is quite meditative, the only sounds being crickets and waves crashing on the rocks below the cliffs that bound Leigh.

The subject matter is the sort of thing that doesn't get photographed where I live - and certainly not at night. I suppose that Brassai must be an influence.
